NEWS

*The recent annual JJBC intensive training camp was a great
success. The theme for the camp was weapons (use of or
defense against). The camp's seminars were taught by Shihan
Michael Seamark, Shihan Steve Hiscoe, Shihan Randy Martin,
Sensei Allen St. John, Sensei Dave Woods, Sensei Ari
Bolden, Sensei Eric Enger and West Coast Jiu-Jitsu's own
Sensei Lori O'Connell. Topics covered included cane,
persuader and bokken(as defensive weapons), as well as
defense against clubs, long guns, and knives. Photos from
the event will be added to our photo album, but you can
view the group photo from the event here:

FEATURE ARTICLE: Weapons and Their Place in Jiu-jitsu
Training

Weapons training (either defense against or use
of) typically enters into Jiu-jitsu at the more advanced
levels of training. Though on occasion, students may be
introduced to weapons theory at seminars (like the recent
JJBC training camp) or at other special classes.

While weapons training is both practical and fun, students
should be aware of their place in Jiu-jitsu training. The
focus on weapons comes later in a student's development
because it is vital that they learn basic foundations in
stance, structure and technique before adding new elements
to the mix.

Striking or applying a technique with a weapon shares the
same foundations as their empty-handed equivalent. A
student is well-advised to reach a solid level with their
bare-handed techniques before delving into serious study of
weapons. This is also true when learning defense against
weapons.

Once you have a strong foundation in the basics, you'll
find that weapons training adds a whole new dimension to
the art of Jiu-jitsu. You'll see how many of the basic
movements necessary for doing proper strikes, locks, holds
and takedowns apply to weapons techniques of all kinds.
You'll better understand and appreciate the depth and
breadth of your basic foundations.

So before you get too concerned with learning weapons
techniques, take a long hard look at your basics and look
for areas that need improvement. A stronger base will
ultimately make it easier to learn weapons training in the
long run.
