Though on occasion, students may be introduced to weapons theory at seminars (like the recent JJBC training camp) or at other special classes. While weapons training is both practical and fun, students should be aware of their place in Jiu-jitsu training. The focus on weapons comes later in a student's development because it is vital that they learn basic foundations in stance, structure and technique before adding new elements to the mix. Striking or applying a technique with a weapon shares the same foundations as their empty-handed equivalent. A student is well-advised to reach a solid level with their bare-handed techniques before delving into serious study of weapons. This is also true when learning defense against weapons. Once you have a strong foundation in the basics, you'll find that weapons training adds a whole new dimension to the art of Jiu-jitsu. You'll see how many of the basic movements necessary for doing proper strikes, locks, holds and takedowns apply to weapons techniques of all kinds. You'll better understand and appreciate the depth and breadth of your basic foundations. So before you get too concerned with learning weapons techniques, take a long hard look at your basics and look for areas that need improvement. A stronger base will ultimately make it easier to learn weapons training in the long run.
