West Coast Jiu-Jitsu Joins the Fight Against Breast Cancer
Jun 5, 2006 --
On June 5, West Coast Jiu-Jitsu's held a women's self-defense course, "Self-Defense for Busy Women" to raise money for breast cancer research
"This course wasn't just about raising money for charity," explains organizer Elizabeth Abela. "It was also about empowering women."
Students learned a number basic self-defense techniques that they were able to master in under three minutes. "If you can't learn a technique in that amount of time, it'll be useless to you on the street under the stress of an attack." They also learned essential safety principles to increase their awareness on the street.
Ten women attended the class and ten women walked away with tools that may save their life some day should they ever be attacked.
All proceeds from the event went directly to the BC Cancer Foundation.
